When I carefully observed the
words 'ME', 'WE',
and 'BE', I saw
how the letters in the words reflected eachother. It was fun
when I noticed all of these little words ended with 'E'. I thought
about the meanings of these three two letter words and wondered
where these alphabetic images came from.
Before our ancestors learned
to connect ideas with graphic images, we had no written language.
No reading. No writing. Imagine that. Ideas were communicated
with body language, and sounds. No one knows who created the
first images to communicate thoughts. I imagine that person sitting
in loose dirt or sand and playing with the marks they made on
the soft surface. This person may have feared what others would
think of them playing with the lines they made and the visions
the lines suggested to them. They may have gone to a secret place
to practice making more shapes and to dream of what these shapes
might mean. The first images that seem to represent human thought
are preserved hidden from light on rocks in caves. After much
thought and practice this early artist may have secretly shared
his or her images and the stories the images represented with
others they felt they could trust. Eventually this band of secret
thinkers seem to have come into the light to reveal their discoveries.
Early in our history those who practiced the use of images to
communicate their dreams, hopes and fears became spiritual leaders
to many. The art of symbolic images has amazing power. Where
would we be today without written language and mathamatical symbols?
